Whether it be an anniversary session, babies and little ones, couples, engagement, family, maternity, or senior, it's no secret that planning a photography session can be really stressful! Not only do you have to plan on what to wear for yourself, but also for your significant other and your little ones too. I, myself, have struggled with this in the past so I thought I'd share a quick list on how to nail your next photo session!
There are so many different styles of imagery. You’ve got light and airy, dark and moody, black and white, the film look, and so much more. Every photographer is not an expert on every type of photography. Most have a brand, a style of imagery they call their own.
Search and follow photographers on instagram and see what their style is all about. If you find yourself drawn to a specific photographer, you may have a winner!
Timing is Key
The best time to shoot is during golden hour which is 60-90 minutes before sunset and right at sunrise. During this time the light is soft, glowy, and dreamy!
What to Wear
This makes a world of a difference. I value my clients and want them loving their images and feeling their absolute best for their session so I send all of my clients a complimentary Portrait Style Session Guide! But I'll let you in on some of the secrets though!
Soft, flowy dresses or skirts photograph beautifully on camera. They add movement to a photograph, bring it life, and make you feel beautiful! Pairing your dress with pretty heels help elongate your legs, and adding in a nice statement piece like a layered necklace or flower crown adds that perfect touch. There's no such thing as too dressed up for a photo shoot!
Pick an outfit you'd wear on a date night. A nice button down, or a shirt paired with chino pants, slacks, or dark fitted jeans. Do you have a blazer? A cool bow tie? Suspenders? A Watch? Adding in an extra element will really pull your look together. And closed toed shoes are a must!
For the Kiddos:
I always recommend having each one in their own color family. For instance, your girl wears a blush dress, your boy wears navy pants with a light blue top, and your other boy wears khaki pants, white button down, and brown suspenders. Each family member having their own color scheme, that compliments each other looks great on camera!
What to Bring to Your Session
For little ones, bring snacks and water! Preferably ones that won't stain their mouths, but will also keep them fed, happy, and possibly work as a bribe. Bringing their favorite stuffed animal or toy is great too! Let's be honest, kids know that it's photo shoot time, and sometimes they’ll do everything in their power not to smile! Candy in this case could be an excellent bribery.
Moms, bring comfy shoes. If you are wearing those gorgeous heels, you'll want something to swap into when walking to different locations during the photo shoot.
Once you've followed all of these tips, it's time to relax! Everything is under control! Let your photographer capture your love, laughter, and joy! After all, that's the whole point of your session!
Don't forget to be instagram friends with your photographer! We usually post sneak peeks on there before delivering the whole gallery to clients. And if your photographer is anything like me, l love following along, seeing your stories long after your session is over!
